"Betsy"
is a style
that appears throughout the ACW years. It's composed of a
buckram brim covered with vintage straw and silk floss and
chenille braid and a soft crown of periwinkle blue silk.
The edge of the bavolet is trimmed with the braid. The
underside of the brim is lined with white silk and a
headliner of cotton. Trim may vary based on
availability.

"Emma," a style of round molded
crown bonnet that began to appear in late 1864 and is
appropriate for very late ACW and Reconstruction Era
impressions. It's been copied from an extant bonnet in
my collection. Built on a buckram, wire and net frame,
the bonnet is covered in silk taffeta and trimmed with silk
ribbon and silk fabric hand-fashioned to mimic trim on the
original bonnet. Vintage Chantilly lace forms the
curtain. Black silk lines the brim which also features
silk and ribbon loops and streaming ends. The interior
is lined with open-weave cotton and includes stiff cotton
net to help keep the bonnet in place. Ties of matching silk
taffeta.

"Jenny," A low brim spoon
bonnet of the early to mid-1860's. Built on a wired
buckram frame, it's covered in silk and decorated with
coordinating silk, ribbon, etc., to your order The
under brim can be trimmed with paper, vintage or handmade
silk or cotton flowers and leaves in a variety of colors and
types. The curtain is lined with cotton net. The brim is
faced with silk. The crown is lined with open-weave
cotton.

"Victoria" High
Brim Spoon Bonnet in burgundy cotton velvet with vintage
Chantilly lace, black taffeta and ostrich plume trim.
Brim faced with black silk and decorated with paper roses
and handmade cotton leaves and sweet peas. Crown lined
with silk and a headliner of open-weave cotton A grosgrain
ribbon bonnet stay is used to keep the bonnet in place.

"Ada," a Mid-50's
to Early 60's Pointed Brim Shirred Bonnet
silk taffeta or habotai with self-fabric scalloped, pinked and ruched
trim on the outer brim. The brim is built with wire and
net and the brim point may be bent down for the
"Marie Stuart" shape. An English net frill
fills the under brim area. Decoration includes paper and
handmade fabric flowers, as required.

| "Polly," A conservative style
for the mid-50's to mid-60's. Black Silk and Silk Crepe 2nd
Mourning Bonnet with deep curtain and quilling of white silk
crepe under the brim. The brim is lined in black silk. The
crown features an open-weave cotton liner.
May also be ordered in all black for a deep mourning
impression or another color for a fashion bonnet.

"Beth" is the straw version of
the "Jenny." This one shown is blocked using a bao
straw body woven in an intricate design. If you have
problems with standard bonnets being too small for you, you
may order this bonnet in a slightly larger size. Other
straw options are available. "Beth" may be purchased
as a blocked, wired and sized blank for $75 or fully
decorated from $135. A completion kit consisting of
sized cotton net for the curtain liner, sized open-weave
cotton for the head liner and a ribbon bonnet stay, with
instructions is available for $7. |

"Libby" is a drawn version of
"Jenny." This one is shown with a contrasting curtain
edge, silk organza net cap and plaid cotton taffeta bow,
eggshell rayon moire' ties and silk utility ties. Libby
may be ordered in your choice of colors and trims, as may most

"Samantha" is a wool felt "Mousquetaire"
or "Postilion"-style hat based on an original in the
collection of the V&A Museum in London. She's
constructed of blocked and sized wool felt with silk band
and bow, feather accents and a cotton/rayon grosgrain ribbon
edge binding. The brim is curled using a vintage
curling shackle tool. A 2-inch wide leather sweatband
completes this stylish hat. Available to your order in

"Victoria," A high
brim spoon bonnet for a very fashionable lady. Black silk
taffeta covers a frame of buckram, wire and net. The crown
and curtain are decorated with vintage braid of horsehair and
chenille. The interior is decorated with a cap of white
lace and a swag of vintage fabric flowers. The curtain is lined
in cotton net, the brim is lined in black silk and the interior
crown is lined with open- weave cotton. A band of sized cotton
net helps to keep the bonnet in place. Black silk utility and
taffeta dressy ties complete the bonnet. $200.

."Belinda" is a c.1862-65 spoon bonnet with a square brim.
This one is dressed for mourning with a cover and curtain of
crape with folds of crape decorating the crown and brim.
A full cap of black rayon netting fills the underside of the
brim. 3" black rayon ribbons form the ties. This
bonnet can be decorated as a dressy bonnet in other colors
and employing flowers, ribbon, lace and/or feathers to

"Melissa" is a drawn bonnet in the shape of the "Ada" bonnet
above. The silk cover is drawn on canes with a shirred
brim area. A contrasting strip of violet silk edges the
curtain and the crown is decorated with loops and tails of plaid
cotton taffeta. The silk-faced under brim features a frill of
cotton bobbinet. The narrow utility ties are of silk and
the fashion ties are eggshell moiré rayon ribbon. A ribbon
bonnet stay has been added to help keep the bonnet in place.

"Belinda" in fashionable dress.
"Belinda" is a c.1862-65 spoon bonnet with a square brim. This
version is covered in shot gray silk taffeta with vintage
Chantilly lace and tapestry gray vintage rayon taffeta ribbon
trim. The crown and tip are fashioned of buckram while the
brim is formed using wire and net. The under brim is faced
with eggshell silk drawn on a reed to form a frilled edge.
A double bow of the vintage gray ribbon accents the under brim,
with a ruching of eggshell tulle filling the crown. The
narrow utility ties are of silk and the fashion ties are vintage
rayon moiré ribbon. A ribbon bonnet stay has been added to help
keep the bonnet in place. As shown, $215 or $200 with your

"Sandra", c.1862-63 shirred and drawn
spoon bonnet based on an original in my collection.

buckram, wire and net frame are covered with shirred and drawn silk
with a self-fabric brim facing. The interior decoration
consists of a "cap" of hand-fluted cotton netting and handmade
cotton roses with vintage glass berries. The two sets of ties
are vintage rayon moiré. A sized open-weave cotton headliner

"Gemma" is based on an extant (original) bonnet in the collection of
MFA Boston, c.1862-64 The crown is covered in rolled pleats of ivory
silk. The net and wire brim is covered in silk drawn on reed. A
frill of ivory rayon English net fills in under the brim while the outer
brim features a ruche of embroidered net lace. The headliner is of
white open weave cotton. The fashion ties are vintage rayon ribbon
and the utility ties are of silk ribbon. This bonnet can be made up in
other colors and handmade flowers are optional for the under brim.

"Emma" dates to very late 1864 to 65. It's based closely on an
extant (antique) bonnet in my collection. Ivory silk taffeta
covers the crown with cotton backed silk forming most of the trim.
Ivory silk and vintage rayon ribbons decorate the underbrim area.
Vintage cotton lace edges the back and represents what was, in prior
years, a curtain. Rayon taffeta ribbon and silk ribbon are used for
dress and utility ties, respectively. Silk is hand-dyed to match. As

"Heather" is Glengarry style straw hat based on an original.
Research indicates this is a post-war fashion for adults. She's
fashioned from blocked woven straw. The lower edge is bound with
wool braid. The lining is open-weave cotton. She's decorated
with a double cockade of plaited and fringed silk topped with a vintage
ostrich plume. All hand-sewn. AVAILABLE NOW. $155 as shown.

"Valerie" is very similar to "Emma"
and is the same late ACW to early reconstruction era. Unlike "Emma,"
this version has a small true curtain, albeit a narrow one. The
drawn and shirred pattern is taken from an
original in my
collection. She is done up here in white with white ties and
fluted cotton net trim under the brim. The ties are German rayon
moiré. To see this bonnet with optional flowers under the brim, click
the photo to see the gallery. This is another example of a
custom-requested bonnet based on an original. As shown, $215.

"Emmaline" is a sheer soft crown
bonnet built on a wire and cotton net frame and based on a bonnet in the
collection of Historic Northampton. This version is made of sheer
silk chiffon with satin blocks woven in. A band of drawn yellow
silk crossed over the crown. This silk also forms the side bow and the
bow under the brim. The bavolet is wired for support. The brim is
faced with fluted cotton net ribbon. The fashion ties are vintage
rayon taffeta ribbon. Emmaline is also available in plain silk
chiffon or crepe and with or without floral trim. As shown, $215.

"Alathea" is based on a c.1854
original, from which the pattern and design were pulled. Shirred
bands of silk taffeta form the crown cover. Black cotton net with
applied bands of taffeta with vintage black lace and new velvet ribbon
make up the unusual curtain. Cotton lace faces the brim and fine
cotton bobbinet forms the full cap. Silk ribbon bows trim the
underbrim and a transparent striped silk bow is applied to the crown.
Silk utility ties and vintage rayon ribbons complete the bonnet. $250.
