   "Betsy,"  A soft-crown bonnet of burgundy silk and vintage burgundy straw and floss braid on a wired  buckram base.  The trim consists of vintage pressed fabric leaves and a feather tuft with loops and ends of scalloped pinked burgundy silk.  The inner brim is lined with white silk and a double frill "cap" of white cotton bobbinet and cotton leavers lace.  The interior is lined with a basted-in head liner of open weave cotton. Sold   "Emma," a style of round molded crown bonnet that began to appear in late 1864 and is appropriate for very late ACW and Reconstruction Era impressions.  It's been copied from an extant bonnet in my collection.  Built on a buckram, wire and net frame, the bonnet is covered in silk taffeta and trimmed with silk ribbon and silk fabric hand-fashioned to mimic trim on the original bonnet.  Vintage chantilly lace forms the curtain.  Black silk lines the brim which also features silk and ribbon loops and streaming ends.  The interior is lined with open-weave cotton and includes stiff cotton net to help keep the bonnet in place. Sold.  A bonnet like this one can be created for you.   "Jenny," A low brim spoon bonnet of the early to mid-1860's.  Built on a wired buckram frame, it's covered in a light brown silk and decorated with maroon and light brown striped silk and a grouping of vintage feathers.  The underbrim is trimmed with paper sunflowers and vintage leaves. The curtain is lined with cotton net. The brim is lined with eggshell taffeta.  The crown is lined with open-weave cotton.  A band of sized cotton netting keeps the bonnet in place. The utility ties are of self-fabric and the dressy ties are of striped silk that harmonizes with the striped trim. "Victoria" High Brim Spoon Bonnet in burgundy cotton velvet with vintage chantilly lace, black taffeta and ostrich plume trim.  Brim faced with black silk and decorated with paper roses and handmade cotton leaves and sweet peas.  Crown lined with silk and a headliner of open-weave cotton A grosgrain ribbon bonnet stay is used to keep the bonnet in place.     "Ada," a Mid-50's to Early 60's Pointed Brim Shirred Bonnet in chocolate brown silk taffeta with self-fabric scalloped, pinked and ruched trim on the outer brim, the under-brim decoration is ruched ivory silk.  The brim point may be bent down for the "Marie Stuart" shape. "Polly," A conservative style for the mid-50's to mid-60's. Black Silk and Silk Crepe 2nd Mourning Bonnet with deep curtain and quilling of white silk crepe under the brim. The brim is lined in black silk. The crown features an open-weave cotton liner.  May also be ordered in all black for a deep mourning impression or another color for a fashion bonnet. Click on photo for additional images.$165.   Sold   "Beth" is the straw version of the "Jenny."  This one shown is blocked using a bao straw body woven in an intricate design. If you have problems with standard bonnets being too small for you, you may order this bonnet in a slightly larger size.  Other straw options are available.  "Beth" may be purchased as a blocked, wired and sized blank for $75 or fully decorated from $135.  A completion kit consisting of sized cotton net for the curtain liner, sized open-weave cotton for the head liner and a ribbon bonnet stay, with instructions is available for $7.

 

  "Betsy" again. This style appears throughout the ACW years.  It's composed of a buckram brim covered with vintage straw and silk floss and chenille braid and a soft crown of periwinkle blue silk.  The edge of the bavolet is trimmed with the braid.  The underside of the brim is lined with white silk and a headliner of cotton.  Vintage white flowers and new pink paper roses trim the under and upper brim and the back.  Loops and ends of cream-colored silk ribbon is used to trim the upper brim and also for the utility ties.  The decorative ties are 3" cream moiré rayon ribbon.  The white flower show a little discoloration due to age. "Samantha" is a wool felt "Mousquetaire" or "Postilion"-style hat based on an original in the collection of the V&A Museum in London.  She's constructed of blocked and sized wool felt with silk band and bow, feather accents and a cotton/rayon grosgrain ribbon edge binding.  The brim is curled using a vintage brim shackle tool. A 2 inch wide leather sweatband completes this stylish hat. Available to your order in assorted colors, $170 for dark colors, $190 for winter white.  Sold Click on photo for additional images. This style is also available in woven straw.   "Victoria," A high brim spoon bonnet for a very fashionable lady. Black silk taffeta covers a frame of buckram, wire  and net. The crown and curtain are decorated with vintage braid of horsehair and chenille.  The interior is decorated with a cap of white lace and a swag of vintage fabric flowers. The curtain is lined in cotton net, the brim is lined in black silk and the interior crown is lined with open- weave cotton. A band of sized cotton net helps to keep the bonnet in place. Black silk utility and taffeta dressy ties complete the bonnet. $200. Click on photo for additional images. Sold As with most of the bonnets shown on this page, this shape can be made up in other colors or dressed for mourning.   ."Belinda" is a c.1862-65 spoon bonnet with a square brim. This one is dressed for mourning with a cover and curtain of crape with folds of crape decorating the crown and brim.  A full cap of black rayon netting fills the underside of the brim.  3" black rayon ribbons form the ties.  This bonnet can be decorated as a dressy bonnet in other colors and employing flowers, ribbon, lace and/or feathers to create a more festive mood.   "Melissa" is a drawn bonnet in the shape of the "Ada" bonnet above.  The silk cover is drawn on canes with a shirred brim area.  A contrasting strip of violet silk edges the curtain and the crown is decorated with loops and tails of plaid cotton taffeta. The silk-faced underbrim features a frill of cotton bobbinet.  The narrow utility ties are of silk and the fashion ties are eggshell moire rayon ribbon.  A ribbon bonnet stay has been added to help keep the bonnet in place.  As shown, $215. Please click photo for additional views.  Sold   "Belinda" in fashionable dress.  "Belinda" is a c.1862-65 spoon bonnet with a square brim. This version is covered in shot gray silk taffeta with vintage chantilly lace and tapestry gray vintage rayon taffeta ribbon trim.  The crown and tip are fashioned of buckram while the brim is formed using wire and net.  The underbrim is faced with eggshell silk drawn on a reed to form a frilled edge.  A double bow of the vintage gray ribbon accents the underbrim, with a ruching of eggshell tulle filling the crown.  The narrow utility ties are of silk and the fashion ties are vintage rayon moire' ribbon. A ribbon bonnet stay has been added to help keep the bonnet in place. As shown, $215 or $200 with your vintage lace. Click here to view.  The buckram, wire and net frame are covered with shirred and drawn silk with a self-fabric brim facing.  The interior decoration consists of a "cap" of hand-fluted cotton netting and handmade cotton roses with vintage glass berries.  The two sets of ties are vintage rayon moire'.  A sized open-weave cotton headliner completes the interior.  As shown, $225.
